Ephesus is known as the “Loveless Church”. While that title is not inaccurate, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Jesus actually begins this “epistle” by commending Ephesus on their strong adherence to sound doctrine. He also expressed how pleased He was that they didn’t allow false teachers and false doctrine into the Church.
Unfortunately, in their zeal to keep their doctrine pure, the Church as Ephesus neglected to show each other the love of Christ, and to spend devotional time with Him. Particularly the charity and self-sacrifice Christianity requires.
There are many congregations today, and throughout history that have been so focused on “being right” about the Bible, that they have failed to show love and compassion towards others. These churches tend to destroy themselves through in-fighting.
Prophetically speaking, Ephesus aligns with the “Apostolic Age”; the first two centuries of the Church. The time from the ascension of Jesus, up until around the time of the great Roman persecutions. It’s easy to understand why this Church had their doctrine right – they were around during the lifetime of all the Apostles! But again, they pursued God’s word at the expense of God’s love. Or put another way, they were so busy doing the work of the King, they had no TIME for the King!
In This week’s episode, we will examine the Letter to Ephesus
